It's yet another gorgeous sunny autumn afternoon, blue skies, toasty sunshine, and better still it's a friday. Having recently decided to re-charge the camera (and use it) I hit the streets of Kunming. My apartment is quite close to Cuihu the beautiful little lake and park in the centre of the city. It is surrounded by long tree-lined streets clogged with the usual spluttering diesel buses, gazillions of e-bikes (electric, underpowered and silent, bless them), pushbikes, and constantly honking cars and taxis all weaving and fighting for space on the street and the footpaths. Away from the noise and fumes I discover a colourful stretch of Huashan Xi Lu (West Magnificent Mountain Street). For at least a hundred metres the high white painted brick wall is painted with how-to-be-a-good-citizen propaganda graphics. The graffics are simple, colourful and the messages require little translation: reminders to give up your seat on the bus for the elderly, to not chuck rubbish everywhere, and beware the copy watch vendors for example. I'm not sure why I should carry my boss in my arms but Im guessing I have to progress further with my chinese studies in order to make sense of that one... |
